Melt Flow Index (MFI) is an important parameter to measure the fluidity of plastic materials under certain conditions. The MFI is measured by means of a specialised MFI meter. This is done by placing a certain amount of polymer into a cylinder and allowing it to melt completely at a specified temperature. Afterwards, the molten polymer flows out of a small fixed diameter hole in the bottom of the barrel under a standard load. Typically, the weight (in grams) of the polymer that flows out in 10 minutes is used to express its melt index. This value reflects the fluidity of the material, i.e. how quickly or slowly it flows under certain conditions.
